November’s selection is Covered With Night: a story of murder and indigenous justice in early America, by historian Nicole Eustace (2021, nonfiction). In 1722, two British colonial fur traders attacked and murdered an Indigenous hunter on the eve of a meeting between Native nations and colonists in 1722, and the investigation pitches Native community-based forms of justice against British traditional reprisals.

October’s selection is River of the Gods: genius, courage and betrayal in the search for the source of the Nile, by Candice Millard. This is the story of the guide, Sidi Mubarak Bombay, without whom the feuding expeditionists Richard Burton and John Hanning Speke would have been able to claim any kind of success.

’64 Cardinals w/ Robert Tiemann and Ron Jacober

Let’s talk baseball! Join us as we host Robert Tiemann and Ron Jacober, authors of ’64 Cardinals: a Team, a Season, and a Showdown for the Ages. In one of the most exciting seasons in baseball history, the 1964 St. Louis Cardinals surged in the final months to steal the pennant and top the mighty Yankees in seven games to capture the World Series. How did an unlikely assortment of people and events come together for such a monumental achievement? Look no further than ’64 Cardinals, a photo-illustrated story of promise, turmoil, and triumph.

The authors will be on hand to discuss the ’64 team and their work in crafting this new volume, just out this year from Reedy Press. Copies of ’64 Cardinals will be available for purchase from Reedy Press.

This event is free and all are welcome.
